The Internationale Keuze Debate raises the question about the role that theatre as a public space can play in searching for possible forms of solidarity in this so-called post-democratic society. It seems as if the relationship between government and citizens has become a merely businesslike relation, the democratic constitutional state is losing its power and the citizens are losing their faith in politicians. But the government is not a company and the citizen is not a consumer. Therefore, the lack of any solidarity also plays a part in the Dutch political debate. As yet, the answers to the question how this vitally necessary commitment and solicitude (betrokkenheid en bekkomernis) in such a post-democratic society can gain shape and content, are missing, despite the call for a strong and committed citizenship.
Already in 1984, political philosopher and Bill Clinton’s former advisor, Benjamin Barber, pleaded in his Strong Democracy for an active citizenship in public space. Barber considers churches and schools to be places for citizenship, something which is called the ‘maatschappelijk middenveld’ (social midfield – in Britain and America called the civil society) in The Netherlands. However, isn’t this ‘midfield’ at this moment rather a place for polarization and moral insecurities than a model of selfawareness and solidarity? Can the arts contribute to the activation of citizens to start using this public space again as a meeting place? May we dare to hope that in particular the theatre can be the place to provide A Sense of Belonging?
The guests will be Benjamin Barber (political philosopher, Bill Clinton’s former advisor and the author of books such as Jihad vs. McWorld and Strong Democracy: Participatory Politics for a New Age), Anton Zijderveld (sociologist and author of Populism as quicksand), Nataliya Golofastova (director of To a wider horizon) and Kristian Koreman (bureau for (landscape)architecture ZUS.), led by Pieter Hilhorst.

Uitzicht op de haven, heerlijk eten vooraf en een borrel na de voorstelling
Naar wijder horizon speelt zich af in de Steinwegkantine op Katendrecht met een prachtig uitzicht op de havens die vijftig jaar eerder het decor waren voor smartelijke afscheidstaferelen. Tijdens alle voorstellingen van Naar wijder horizon kunt u kiezen voor een geheel verzorgde avond. Wanneer u gebruik maakt van het speciale Naar wijder horizon arrangement wordt u door de Watertaxi opgehaald aan de Veerhaven en naar Katendrecht gevaren. Op het Deliplein kunt u vervolgens op een overdekt terras genieten van een driegangendiner verzorgt door Theater Walhalla in samenwerking met Table d’Hotes De Jonge de Jong. Na de voorstelling wordt u weer opgehaald door de Watertaxi en teruggebracht naar de Veerhaven
